A
  • Adaptive Chassis Control
    • The electrically controlled dampers of adaptive chassis control constantly adjust to the road conditions, the driving situation and driver’s requirements. Using a button located on the centre console, the driver selects between three damper settings – NORMAL, COMFORT and SPORT.
      Starting from the normal setting, the driver can change the basic character of the car towards sporty or more comfort-oriented driving. In SPORT and COMFORT settings, the corresponding name is highlighted. In all settings, the adaptive chassis control adjusts the damping to the particular driving situation (up till one thousand times per second) which means it offers an optimum level of driving comfort and enjoyment at all times. In addition, in the SPORT setting the steering feel is also adapted. Particularly on winding roads and poor surfaces, using adaptive chassis control offers sporty and yet comfortable driving.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)*
    • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is an extension of the conventional cruise control system with advanced capabilities based on a radar sensor. When ACC is activated, the vehicle automatically brakes and accelerates in a speed range set by the driver. If the vehicle approaches a slower vehicle, the ACC brakes the car to the same speed and maintains the pre-selected distance. Even when a vehicle pulls into the same lane in front of you or slows, your vehicle is automatically decelerated to the pre-selected distance. If the vehicle ahead moves out of your lane, the vehicle then accelerates up to the preset desired speed. Deceleration of the vehicle may take place via intervention in the engine management system. If deceleration via engine torque is not sufficient, brake intervention takes place, braking the vehicle to a standstill if the traffic situation necessitates (Automatic Models).
      *Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible for the vehicle and must monitor the speed and distance in relation to other vehicles. The ACC system should not be used on winding roads or in adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain.
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
    • When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheel speed and should one or more wheels start to lock the ABS system reduces brake pressure to that wheel. This prevents the wheels from locking during heavy or emergency braking, enabling the vehicle to remain steerable.
  • Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
    • ASR is a traction control system that prevents the wheels from spinning under acceleration by reducing engine torque. It is active at speeds above 40km/h.
  • Auto Hold function
    • As soon as the vehicle comes to a complete stop, the ABS hydraulic unit stores the vehicles final braking pressure. So even when you take your foot off the brake pedal, all four wheels brakes remain applied, providing increased comfort in stationary traffic. This function is released automatically when you drive off again.

  • Brake Assist
    • During emergency braking, Brake Assist aids the driver by increasing the brake pressure automatically to a level exceeding the locking limit. The ABS is thus quickly brought into the operating range, which enables maximum vehicle deceleration to be achieved.
  • Brake Energy Recuperation System
    • As soon as the vehicle comes to a complete stop, the ABS hydraulic unit stores the vehicles final braking pressure. So even when you take your foot off the brake pedal, all four wheels brakes remain applied, providing increased comfort in stationary traffic.   • City Emergency Braking function (City EB) (up!)
    • The City Emergency Braking function is a laser-based emergency braking system designed to help a driver avoid a low-speed crash or to reduce its severity. At vehicle speeds between 5km/h and 30km/h, City Emergency Braking monitors an area 10m ahead of the car for vehicles which might present a threat of collision. If a collision is likely, City Emergency Braking first pre-charges the brakes and makes the emergency Brake Assist system more sensitive: if the driver should notice the risk, the car is ready to respond more quickly to their braking action. However, if the driver still takes no action and a collision becomes imminent, City Emergency Braking independently applies the brakes very hard. If the driver intervenes to try to avoid the accident, either by accelerating hard or by steering, City Emergency Braking will deactivate and allow the driver to complete the avoidance maneuver. City Emergency Braking cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible for the vehicle and must monitor the speed and distance in relation to other vehicles. City Emergency Braking functions only between 5km/h and 30km/h, so will not assist in accidents at ‘motorway’ speeds. Its laser can detect vehicles which are at a standstill or which are travelling in the same direction and works at night as well as during the day. However, the sensor is compromised if it is covered by dirt, or in adverse weather conditions such as thick fog or heavy rain. To mitigate this, the sensor is sited in the area, which is swept by the windscreen wipers.
  • Coasting Function
    • While driving, as the driver’s foot is taken off the accelerator pedal the engine is declutched, allowing the vehicle to coast and roll over a longer distance. The momentum of the vehicle is used to save fuel with a foresighted driving style. When the brake, accelerator pedal or the gear selector lever is operated, the clutch is re-engaged and engine braking / drive takes effect. Coasting Function can be selected or deselected via the multifunction display settings. The gear selector lever is required to be in the D position to be functional. The coasting function is only available with direct shift gearbox (DSG) transmissions in selected models.

  • Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)
    • DSG is a manual gearbox in which the gearshifts are controlled electronically. What makes the DSG unique is that it has 2 separate gear sets operated by 2 clutches. The benefit of 2 gear sets and 2 clutches is that one gear set and clutch is engaged driving the vehicle with the second disengaged clutch having already pre-selected the next gear awaiting for power to be transferred. As the next gear has already been pre-selected prior to power being applied, the gear change only takes 3-4 100ths of a second. There is virtually no interruption to power, traction or acceleration.
      The DSG also offers Tiptronic gear selection and sports mode.
  • Driving Profile Selection
    • Driving profile selection provides the driver with a wide-ranging choice of settings that can be made to the vehicle according to the driver’s preferences. The driver has the option of choosing between the following driving profiles: Normal, Sport (Race – Golf R), Eco, Comfort and Individual. The Normal profile offers a comfortable but dynamic driving style. Sport provides faster response of the accelerator pedal, sportier damping and steering, while the (optional) DSG switches to Sport mode. Additionally, the Golf R features Race mode, damping is increased (which further reduces movements of the body structure), and engine response and shift points of the (optional) DSG are configured to be even more dynamic. Eco mode has been designed to enhance fuel efficiency by including coasting function (with DSG) and by adapting engine performance, earlier gearshift points and consumption-optimised control of the air conditioning system. Comfort mode offers a more relaxed and comfortable driving experience, primarily through the softer suspension setting of the adaptive chassis control. The Individual setting allows the driver to separately set various parameters including steering, engine, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and air conditioning.

  • Easy Open
    • Is a convenient method to open the boot without the use of the vehicles key. The Keyless Access sensor recognises the driver behind the vehicle. A certain foot movement at the back of the vehicle signals for the boot to automatically open without touching the vehicle.
  • Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)
    • Electronic, more sophisticated means of regulating the ratio of front/rear brake pressure. Settings are varied according to driving and load conditions to ensure each wheel is braked to the optimum extent.
  • Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)
    • EDL improves driving and steering characteristics when accelerating on road surfaces where each wheel has a different degree of traction. The system operates automatically and is combined with the ABS system. Using the ABS wheel sensors, EDL monitors the speed of the individual driving wheels. When a difference in driving wheel speed is detected (i.e. when one wheel starts to spin due to differences in road surfaces, e.g. due to water or dirt) the system brakes the spinning wheel, transferring engine power to the wheel with the best traction.
  • Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)
    • ABS and ASR traction control systems are integrated into the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP). In short, ESP helps ensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it even in extreme driving conditions. The ESP system constantly compares the actual movement of the vehicle with pre-determined values and should a situation arise where the vehicle starts to skid, ESP will apply the brakes to individual wheels and automatically adjust the engine’s power output to correct the problem. ESP helps prevent the vehicle from losing control when trying to avoid an accident, for example. It also helps prevent spinning off on a curve due to either understeer or oversteer.
  • Engine Braking Control (EBC)
    • Prevents the driven wheels from locking if the accelerator is lifted very suddenly or the vehicle is braked sharply because a low gear is engaged.
  • Extended Electronic Differential Lock (XDL)
    • XDL is an extension of the Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) function. When cornering, XDL responds to the load relief at the front wheel on the inside of a corner. The ESP hydraulics are used for the XDL to apply pressure to the wheel on the inside of the corner in order to help prevent wheel spin. This improves traction and reduces the tendency to understeer. As a direct result of the one-sided and precise braking pressure, cornering is sportier and more accurate.

  • Fatigue Detection
    • Prevents the driven wheels from locking if the accelerator is lifted very suddenly or the vehicle is braked sharply because a low gear is engaged.
  • Front Assist with City Emergency Brake (City EB) function
    • The Front Assist ambient traffic monitoring system uses a radar sensor to detect critical distance situations and thus help to shorten the braking distance, reducing the risk of a rear-end collision. The traffic ahead is monitored constantly by the radar at the front. If a vehicle is detected ahead of you in the lane, the distance and the speed relative to it are calculated. If the gap is closing too fast, Front Assist initially warns the driver by means of an audible as well as a visual signal. At the same time, the brake pads are brought into contact with the brake discs and the sensitivity of the Brake Assist is increased. This primes the braking system for a possible emergency stop. Furthermore, an automatic jolt of the brakes warns the driver of the danger. If the driver also fails to react to the warning jolt, Front Assist brakes automatically, helping to avoid a collision or reduce the severity of the accident.
      The City Emergency Brake (City EB) function is a radar based emergency braking system designed to help a driver avoid a low-speed crash or to reduce its severity. At vehicle speeds below 30km/h, City EB monitors the area ahead of the car for vehicles which might present a threat of collision.   • Front Differential Lock
    • The front differential lock is an electronically controlled mechanical differential lock. The drive torque is distributed via an electronically operated clutch in accordance with the driving situation. The differential lock actively counteracts understeer when cornering by increasing the drive force to the wheel on the outside of the bend. This provides more agility and precision on curves, and a more linear driving response. The front differential lock also provides maximum traction for front-wheel drive vehicles.
      Both the XDL and front differential lock increase agility, traction and cornering ability. XDL exerts its effect during medium lateral acceleration, whilst the front differential lock enhances this effect right up to the dynamic driving limit range
  • FSI Engine
    • With the FSI technology, fuel is injected directly into the engines combustion chambers. It’s a precise fuel injection at finely tuned intervals to achieve highly powerful and efficient combustion. Good for you and better for the environment.

  • Hill Decent Assist
    • Hill Descent Assist supports the driver when driving down a steep incline at the speed elected by the driver by means of actively controlled brake applications. Hill Descent Assistance will only operate when off road mode is activated, speeds are lower than 30km/h, the gradient is greater than 10%, the engine is running and the accelerator and brake pedals are not pressed.
  • Hill Start Assist (HSA)
    • Hill Start Assist (HSA) holds the vehicle when the foot brake is released by temporarily locking the brake pressure (for a maximum of 1.5 seconds) to provide comfortable starting-off without rolling back. Hill Start Assist (HSA) operates on inclines greater than 5% and is fitted in combination with both the manual transmission and the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

  • Lane Assist
    • Lane Assist is a lane departure warning system that is designed to help reduce the likelihood of the vehicle leaving the road or crossing into an oncoming lane and therefore the risk of accident as a result of driver distraction or a lapse in concentration. The Lane Assist system monitors the road ahead with the aid of a camera (located near the interior rear-view mirror) which recognises lane markings and evaluates the position of the vehicle. If the vehicle starts to leave the lane, the Lane Assist system takes corrective steering action or vibration depending on model. If this is not sufficient the driver is warned about the situation by a steering vibration and is asked to take over the steering. Additionally, if no active steering movements by the driver are recognised for longer than approximately 8 seconds, a message will appear in the Multi-Function Display in conjunction with a warning tone. The corrective steering function can be overridden by the driver at any time and the system does not react if the turn indicator is set before crossing a lane marking. Lane Assist cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible for the vehicle and therefore staying in the lane at all times. The system will not work if there are no recognisable lane markings. The camera vision can be reduced by rain, snow, heavy spray or oncoming lights. This and vehicles in front of you can lead to the lane markings not being recognised by the Lane Assist system. The Lane Assist system does not activate at a vehicle speed of less than 65km/h.
  • Lane Assist (Touareg)
    • Lane Assist is a lane departure warning system that is designed to help reduce the likelihood of the vehicle leaving the road or crossing into on oncoming lane and therefore the risk of accident as a result of driver distraction or a lapse in concentration. The Lane Assist system monitors the road ahead with the aid of a multi-function camera (located near the interior rear-view mirror) which recognises lane markings and evaluates the position of the vehicle. If the vehicle starts to leave the lane, the driver is warned about the situation by a steering wheel vibration.Lane Assist cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible for the vehicle and therefore staying in the lane at all times. The system will not work if there are no recognisable lane markings. The camera vision can be reduced by rain, snow, heavy spray or oncoming lights. This and vehicles in front of you can lead to the lane markings not being recognised by the Lane Assist system.   • Media Device Interface (MDI)
    • This convenient feature allows you to connect your USB media player, storage device or iPod® to the audio system. The MDI includes a USB cable to connect your media player to the audio system – an iPod cable, USB mini and Auxiliary cable are available as an accessory. The device may then be controlled by the in-dash system rather than its own interface, making operation safer and easier. Best of all, the MDI connection will charge your portable device up while it’s connected.
      *Please note: iPhone 5 compatibility is not yet available
  • Multi-collision brake
    • The multi-collision brake has been designed to provide effective assistance for the driver in the moments after an accident. Multi-collision brake triggers automatic controlled braking once an initial collision has been detected so as to reduce the intensity of further accidents after a collision and can help prevent follow-on collisions with oncoming traffic.
      The triggering of the multi-collision brake is based on a collision being detected by the airbag sensors. The ESP control unit limits the deceleration of the vehicle by the multi-collision brake to a defined value and vehicle speed. The vehicle can still be controlled by the driver, even when automatic braking is taking place. The driver can interrupt the multi-collision braking at any time by accelerating or braking even more strongly.
  • Multi Function Display (MFD)
    • The MFD is screen-operated multi-function display system that is used to display useful vehicle information (like fuel range or outside temperature) and trip information (like average speed, current speed and speed warnings). The MFD Plus allows you to also display information from other systems (radio, navigation, phone etc.) and customise lighting and security settings. MFD Premium is a colour version of MFD Plus.

  • Navigon - Portable Infotainment Device (PID) (up!)
    • Navigon is a leader in mobile navigation technology and has worked closely with Volkswagen to deliver a PID that combines its feature-rich positioning system with all the extra functionality required to make it an indispensable companion on every trip, no matter how short or how long. Features Navigation, Bluetooth, Media and Car information.

  • Optical Parking System (OPS)
    • The Optical Parking System provides a visual display of the Vehicle on the radio or navigation system screen, showing the vehicles position and distance from obstacles. The location of any obstacle within range of the ultrasonic sensors is highlighted on screen. Optical Parking System (OPS) cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible for the vehicle. If the driver notices a risk that pedestrians, other vehicles or objects could be damaged or if they are uncertain of the risk, they will need to react accordingly and stop the vehicle, ending the function.

  • Park Assist
    • Park Assist actively helps the driver when reversing into parallel parking spaces. The system works by using sensors mounted either side of the front bumper together with parking distance sensors front and rear. To parallel park the driver needs to press the Park Assist button and use the appropriate indicator before the car passes the potential parking space. Sensors in the front bumper then scan the size of the parking space as the car is driven slowly past and the driver is alerted if the parking space is big enough. If there is sufficient space, the driver stops the car, selects reverse and let’s go of the steering wheel. Park Assist will alert the driver of the intended reverse path in the Multi-Function Display, within the driver’s field of vision. Park Assist then actively supports the driver by taking over the steering control and parks the vehicle in the available space using the ideal course, if necessary with several moves. The driver can however take over the control of the steering at any time and end the automatic parking procedure. The system can reverse into parking spaces on both the left hand and right hand side of the road, for example on one way streets. Park Assist cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible for the vehicle. If the driver notices a risk that pedestrians, other vehicles or objects could be damaged or if they are uncertain of the risk, they will need to react accordingly and stop the vehicle, ending the function.
  • Park Assist 2
    • In addition to Park Assist, Park Assist 2 actively helps the driver when reversing into 90 degrees parking bays, as well as reversing into and driving out of parallel parking spaces. The system works by using sensors mounted either side of the front and rear bumpers together with parking distance sensors front and rear. To park, the driver simply presses the Park Assist button to select the type of parking manoeuvre and uses the appropriate indicator as the car slowly passes the potential parking space. Sensors scan the size of the parking space as the car is driven past and the driver is alerted if the parking space is big enough. If there is sufficient space, the driver stops the car, selects reverse and lets go of the steering wheel. Park Assist will alert the driver of the intended path and subsequently the appearance of obstacles in the Multi-Function Display, within the driver’s field of vision. Park Assist then actively supports the driver by taking over the steering control and parks the vehicle in the available space using the ideal course, if necessary with several moves.   • Proactive Occupant Protection System
    • The proactive occupant protection system incorporates active and passive safety elements. When the system detects a potential accident situation, the occupants and the vehicle are prepared for a possible accident. Automatic tensioning of the seat belts secures the driver and front passenger in their seats to attain the best possible protective potential of the airbag and belt system. In case of high transverse dynamics the side windows (and optional panoramic sunroof) are also closed, leaving just a small air gap. Closing of the windows offers optimal support to the head and side airbags which results in the best possible protection.

  • RCD310 Audio System
    • The RCD310 audio system includes an MP3 compatible CD player, so you can rip your favorite music from your computer’s hard drive to a data disc. It also includes an auxiliary input socket to accommodate other music sources.
  • RCD510 Audio System
    • The RCD510 audio system has a 6-disc CD sound system with 6.5" touchscreen display. It includes an SD card slot and colour display featuring ‘pop-ups’ for the climate control air conditioning and Optical Parking System (OPS).
  • RNS510 Satellite Navigation System
    • The RNS510 Satellite Navigation System uses a touchscreen and an intuitive user interface to provide real-time location and navigation information on its bright, colour hi-res display. The fast processor provides rapid updates and accurate navigation, and the system includes a DVD drive and 30GB hard drive to handle mapping data and a range of music files.
  • RCD310 Audio System
    • The RCD310 audio system includes an MP3 compatible CD player, so you can rip your favorite music from your computer’s hard drive to a data disc. It also includes an auxiliary input socket to accommodate other music sources.

  • Side Assist
    • Side Assist, is a lane change assistant detects vehicles on the right and left hand side of the lane, in the blind spot and those vehicles coming nearer behind. The system informs with orange warning light in the exterior mirror whenever a detected vehicle is close and a lane change would be dangerous. If the driver sets the indicator, the warning light begins to flash.
  • Start stop system
    • The innovative start/stop system automatically* stops the engine when you come to a standstill, cutting back on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. And all it takes to resume driving is engaging/depressing the clutch (Manual) or releasing the brake (Auto/DSG). *Deactivation will not occur in certain conditions.

  • 4MOTION®
    • An all-wheel-drive system that helps provide the best possible traction at all road speeds, in different conditions. An electronic Haldex clutch responds to traction losses at the front and rear axles and directs torque to the axle with the best traction.
  • 4MOTION® (Touareg)
    • The power of the Touareg engine is transmitted to the wheels via the permanent 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system. This flow of power is handled by a Torsen transfer box to direct drive to the wheels where required to help provide the best possible traction at all road speeds in different conditions.
  • 4XMOTION® (Touareg)
    • The power of the Touareg engine is transmitted to the wheels via the continuous 4XMOTION® four-wheel drive system. This flow of power is handled by a transfer gearbox, which includes off-road reduction. The 4XMOTION® system also includes a locking central and rear differential.
      In normal situations - dry road, even grip, constant engine power –the drive torque is distributed uniformly to the front and rear axles without slip. The four-wheel drive system is distinguished by a 38:62 distribution of power to the front and rear axles through a centre differential. A four-wheel EDL (Electronic Differential Lock via braking) also supports this adjusted power distribution. To improve tractability further both centre and rear differentials can be locked via the centre console dials.
